60ers FAQ
Why? Cause it should be was fun
More why? Turning 60 is a mixed thing, so what to do about it is also mixed.
  • On one hand, you're not a kid anymore; so why the heck celebrate?
  • But, it is a momentous round number. Seems tacky to not recognize it with some gusto
And having a joint party, for several of us turning 60 in 2014, strikes us as a good solution to this conundrum.
When? Sunday, September 21. 11AM Noon to 5 PM
Where? The picnic   shelter at Sky Meadows State Park, Virginia. -- seven miles north of I-66. From DC: west on I-66 to Route 17 North (exit 23, about 40 miles from the beltway). After 6 miles, turn left on rt 710 (Edmonds Ln).. the park is about 1/2 mile down the road (rough map: beltway to sky meadows).

Sky Meadows straddles the Appalachian trail (at a relatively flat portion). There is a 1.4 mile hike to a summit -- not a great view from the summit, but the walk is partially through hillside meadows that are quite scenic.

No swimming or boating, but there is a 3 acre pond for shoreline fishing (periodically stocked).

Bathroom notice: at the picnic site there are 2 non-flush toilets -- with no running water. We will provide hand cleaner and paper towels, or you can saunter 1/2 mile up the road to the visitor center

There is a $5.00 per car admissions fee. Note that to find the group picnic area: after entering the park (and paying the $5.00), drive about 100 feet and take the first right. Drive down a bit of a bumpy (but not terrible) dirt road. You will see the group area (10 tables under a wooden roof) on the left.

Can anyone attend? This is a by invitation party. We struggled with making it open to everyone (especially everyone at ERS), but the facilities aren't that big.
If we didn't invite you, please accept our apologies. If we didn't invite you, but you would like to come -- that changes things. Let let us know and we will fit you in!
I got invited... what should I do? You should ...
  1. Let us know if you can attend, and how many will be attending (i.e.; spouses and kids)
  2. If you want to be hip and cool, give us an "expected number of attendees" (prob of attendance * number attending). That would help us plan.
To do both of the above... use the Click here to RSVP button at the top of this page!.
  3. Do not (repeat, not) bring presents. We have enough junk in our lives already!
What do I have to do? Other than RSVP .. come and have fun. We will provide food (the details are still up in the air).

Some of you may feel like bringing some food? That could be fun.... but please do not feel obligated! But if you are the guilty sort, for whom a 3 hour round trip is a mere bagatelle -- let us know what kind of food you will bring so we can adjust our plans.

Notes
  • As a state park, alcohol is officially not permitted. That said, so long as one is discreet (use cups), there should be no problem.
That does mean we will not be providing beer/wine. So you should bring your own!
